         Tonga

Tonga is a Polynesian kingdom of more than 170 South Pacific islands but only 38 are inhabited. Most are lined in white beaches and coral reefs covered with tropical rain forest. Tonga’s main island is Tongatapu. Tonga is the only Polynesian island known in the pacific to have a king.  



Tongan values are  Fefaka'apa'apa'aki (mutual respect) Feveitokai'aki (sharing, cooperating and fulfillment of mutual obligations), Lototoo (humility and generosity) and Tauhi vaha'a (loyalty and commitment). Family and church are one of the most important things to Tongan people. In Tonga, it is illegal to do any business,go shopping or play any type of sports on Sunday. Tonga’s calendar has 13 months. 


Tonga’s capital is Nuku’alofa. The Heilala Flower is the traditional flower of Tonga. The most popular dish in Tonga is Kapisi Pulu, it contains corned beef, tomatoes, onions and coconut cream. Another popular dish in Tonga is Ota’ika, it contains chopped raw fish, coconut milk and sometimes vegetables. One of the most popular and traditional clothing in Tonga is a kiekie, it is a skirt made out of plant fibers. Kiekie is only worn by Tongan women's.


 When Captain James Cook traveled to Tonga, he was amazed by the hospitality of the Tongan people and so he called it the friendly island. Tonga is one of the most rich heritage islands in the pacific.
